NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- At least one person is in custody after a campus-wide alert at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, after a suspicious person was reportedly seen. Students have been told they are free to leave their rooms.
New Britain Mayor Tim O'Brien, and a Tweet from the university, officially announced a person was in custody.
"Police have one suspect in custody," the CCSU Tweet said. A short time later another Tweet gave the all clear.
We don't know who the people are who were taken into custody, or what charges they may face.
Classes at CCSU have been canceled for the day.
Earlier in the afternoon, Mayor O'Brien said no one has been injured.
The drama began around noon when CCSU officials posted the following on Twitter: "Campus emergency. Seek shelter. Lock doors, close windows. We will communicate when we have more info. This is not a drill."
Students were additionally told to stay inside their buildings until instructed to do otherwise.
According to the Associated Press, University spokesman Mark McLaughlin says somebody was seen "either with a gun or was thought to have a gun."
The police activity seems to be in and around James Hall.
A Tweet from the residence hall's account said, "There are 400 residents that live in the building. We are praying for the safety of all of them and everyone around the area. "
CCSU sophomore AJ Cutollo lives in James Hall and spoke with News 8 about how he found out about the incident.
"I went to the gym around 11 and got a text around 11:10, don't go back to James, something's going on, a guy with a gun walked in," he said. "My roommate saw him actually walk out of the place in a paintball mask, AK-47 and a Samurai sword."
Heavly armed state and local police were on the scene, and streets around the university have been closed to the public.
Students at HALS Academy, Holmes Elementary, and Smalley Academy in New Britain were put on a modified lockdown as a precaution.
