Hot Trends: Cowboys will wear blue jerseys at home for first time in decades

Traditionally, the team wears white at home.

For the first time in at least 40 years, the Dallas Cowboys will wear blue jerseys for a home game.

The decision was made after the team was unable to wear its traditional Thanksgiving throwback jerseys because of an NFL rule that requires teams to wear the same helmet for every game. (Using one helmet purportedly helps prevent concussions, though opinions are mixed as to efficacy of the rule.)

While the usual Thanksgiving throwbacks have a blue front with white sleeves, the uniforms Dallas will wear in the late-afternoon Thanksgiving game are the solid blue the team occasionally wears on the road. Cowboys.com says the blue jerseys haven't been worn since Dallas left the Cotton Bowl in 1971.

Dallas is one of the few NFL teams to wear white at home. Longtime general manager Tex Schramm wanted fans to see varying color patterns, which wouldn't happen if road teams always wore white jerseys while the Cowboys were in blue. Thus, the Cowboys wore white at home. And since other NFL teams tend to wear colored jerseys for their home games, the Cowboys rarely break out the blues.
