Marvel Studios
The first thing fans learned from the debut "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" trailer is that the Marvel studio doesn't need a parachute when he jumps out of a plane.
Judging by the rest of the 2 minutes and 30 seconds that follow - he doesn't need The Hulk, Iron Man or Thor, either.
Unlike his flashier teammates, Captain America is facing a shadowy threat that he can't just punch his way out of - although there's plenty of that in the trailer, too - in a storyline that's heavily influenced by '70s conspiracy thrillers. And what better way to channel that vibe than add "All The President's Men" veteran Robert Redford to the cast. RELATED: 'THOR' STAR CHRIS HEMSWORTH CHATS WITH DAILY NEWS READERS
"To build a better world, sometimes it means tearing the old one down - and that makes enemies," warns Redford's Alexander Pierce, captain's government handler.
Cue the enemies, which include the titular mysterious assassin - whose identity is well known to fans of the recent Captain America comic book storyline - one of the few villains who can actually catch Captain America's shield.
The threat is grave enough to cause the trailer's money shot: a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier crashing into the water in flames. PHOTOS: COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES: FROM THE PANELS TO THE BIG SCREEN
Captain America, though, is knee deep in reinforcements - including the flying Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, who's back to jumping off catwalks and firing guns.
Not much more is known about the plot - which is shrouded in S.H.I.E.L.D. Level 7 security clearance secrecy - although Evans was photographed kissing Scarlett Johansson for a romantic scene filmed in Cleveland's Tower City mall in June.
Those photographs of the kiss made for a major spoiler - that their characters, Captain America and Black Widow were destined to do more than just fight bad guys together.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo and also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Emily VanCamp and Sebastian Stan, hits theaters April 4, 2014.
