Selena Gomez broke millions of fans' hearts when she canceled her Australian tour on Dec. 19, and on Dec. 27 news broke that Selena was battling lupus. Here's why canceling her tour was the right idea.
Selena Gomez, 21, is one tough cookie - but once it was announced that she was fighting lupus, it became clear that canceling her Australian tour was the perfect move. Selena Gomez: Why Canceling Her Tour Was The Right Idea
Take Our Poll
In case you haven't heard, lupus really sucks. So when Popdust.com first reported Selena's illness, I was immediately on her side.
"Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her lupus is really catching up with her right now," a source told Popdust.com. "She knows that she needs to take some time to address the disease and look after herself better if she wants to live a full and healthy life."
What could possibly be more important? Lupus - an inflammatory disease that attacks the body's organs - comes with terrible symptoms like a butterfly shaped rash on the face, shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes, headaches, skin lesions, fever and memory loss. I know that the "Come and Get It Singer" has millions of fans who are brokenhearted right now - and I feel for them - but wouldn't they rather see Selena once she's good and healthy? If not treated, lupus can cause serious problems, such as kidney damage, anemia, strokes or even seizures, and I would be devastated if that happened to Selena - I'm sure her fans feel the same way.
Also, getting some good R&R in a year that included a high-profile breakup, a new hit album ( Stars Dance), and two high-profile films - one of them being the controversial sex-fest Spring Breakers - sounds like a good idea for anyone's health, let alone a constantly on-the-go star like Selena. Lupus can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs as well as lost of sleep, a healthy diet, and staying out of the sun, and it's virtually impossible to stay relaxed and non sleep-deprived when you're constantly traveling on tour. Also, staying out of the sun in the middle of Australia's winter would have been tough for Selena, you know?
Staying at home with friends and family is the healthy, happy solution to Selena's problem - and good on her for being smart and savvy enough to realize that. Selena Gomez: Canceled Tour Will Also Help Heal Breakup Wounds
Instead of making herself feel even worse by pushing herself, Selena is doing exactly what she needs to - taking time off to focus on getting better.
"My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them," Selena said in an official statement when she canceled her tour. "But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be."
I'm so glad that Selena is taking the much-needed time to focus on herself and her own health, and I also hope that she uses this precious "me" time to finally rid her mind of Justin Bieber! "She wants to heal from the Justin relationship since she just dealt with it with work and never gave herself sometime for herself," a source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. Still not over Justin?! You're better than that, Selena - and hopefully this time off will help you realize that, too.
