Hot Trends: E-40 Questions Authenticity Of Recent Mac Dre Tributes

Exclusive: E-40 recalls connecting Los Angeles and the Bay Area with "Function," and says rappers are capitalizing of off Mac Dre's legacy with their recent hits.

Yo Gotti's Jeezy-assisted single, "Act Right" entered Billboard magazine's "Hot 100" chart this week, joining Drake's 2011 single, "The Motto" on the list of recent, charting songs to pay homage to slain Bay Area rapper Mac Dre. But fellow Bay Area emcee, E-40 questioned the motives of such artists.

"Man, you know my words carry a lot of weight. I have nothing against none of them dudes, right? They just capitalizing off a great rapper that was from the Bay and passed away," E-40 said during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. "They know that the Bay had love for him, so why not say his name? Can I say that they listened to him before he passed or even after? Can I say that they can quote his lyrics? I don't know. But hey, they did come to the Bay and shoot the videos and invite the whole Bay out. It opened a lot of people to the sound when Drake did it. And with Yo Gotti, I hear it everywhere. So to each his own, man. I ain't mad at it. It is what it is."

Mac Dre, born Andre Hicks, was killed in 2004 in Kansas City, Missouri when a gunman fired into a van in which Hicks was riding. Known for his signature slang, E-40 added that he often feels the Bay Area gets overlooked in terms of trendsetting. Additionally, 40 praised Richmond, California emcees Calvin T and Magic Mike as influences. And he often speaks out in support of his hometown Vallejo and the surrounding Bay Area, E-40 pointed out the need for West Coast unity and how his 2012 single "Function" fit into that agenda.

The West Coast hadn't been on for a minute," E-40 said. "We all the way on now, and everybody wanna get some West Coast slaps...I wanted to bring the Bay Area and Lala together, because we all West Coast. It was just God that did it, because 'Function' wasn't a violent song. It was just a slap, and it's not going nowhere. I think it's in there, 'cause it's played everywhere. I was glad to be with the youngsters, and I truly believe in them. All of them told me, 'Right on, Unc.'"

After emerging on the scene with his Mr. Flamboyant EP in 1989 E-40 will continue his 21-year career in Hip Hop with the release of Block Brochure: Welcome To The Soil 4, 5 & 6 on December 10. In addition to the single "Plush," E-40 explained that the albums will feature singles that either sample and/or interpolate "Stairway to Heaven" by the O'Jays, "Doo Wah Ditty" by Roger Troutman and Zapp among others.

Hot Trends: Stewart Mandel: Ohio State outlasts Michigan in surprise rivalry shootout

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The letters "BCS" or the words "national championship" barely entered the air during Ohio State's postgame press conference on Saturday. The Iron Bowl might as well have been taking place on another planet. All that mattered was the Buckeyes had just defeated Michigan 42-41 in one of the most thrilling contests in the 110-year history of their rivalry. Even the fact that Urban Meyer's team just earned its 24th consecutive victory took a back seat to The Game itself.

Three hours later, Ohio State coaches and players were on buses about 10 miles north of Delaware, Ohio, when Auburn's Chris Davis returned a missed Alabama field goal 109 yards for a touchdown as time expired to knock off the top-ranked Crimson Tide. In doing so, he likely lifted the Buckeyes to the No. 2 spot in Sunday's BCS standings. Now is it time to talk about the BCS?

"Nothing to say at this time," Meyer texted SI.com from the bus.

The Buckeyes needed their own last-second drama on Saturday to even remain in the conversation, as an anticipated blowout turned into a high-scoring thriller. Redshirt freshman nickelback Tyvis Powell intercepted Wolverines quarterback Devin Gardner's potential game-winning two-point conversion attempt with 32 seconds remaining.

"We were in there taking a shower ... that's when it really hit me," Powell said. "That was our season on the line -- 12-0, gold pants, chance at the national championship. Wow, I really kind of just saved our season."

Most assumed this would be an uneventful prelude to the third-ranked Buckeyes' Big Ten title game against Michigan State next weekend. After all, it seemed a mismatch given the 7-4 Wolverines' offensive ineptitude since the beginning of November. But rivalry games have a way of producing wholly unexpected events -- be it the second-quarter brawl that resulted in three players' ejections (Ohio State running back/return man Dontre Wilson and offensive lineman Marcus Hall; Michigan linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone) or Michigan's unexpected offensive outburst.

VIDEO: Ohio State and Michigan players get into fight; three ejected from game

"We got knocked down a couple times this year ... We could have easily rolled over and died against the number three team in the country," said Wolverines tackle Taylor Lewan "We kept going, kept fighting, kept moving every time."

In a transcendent performance unlike any he'd recently delivered, Gardner thoroughly flummoxed Ohio State's defense. He completed 32-of-45 passes for 451 yards with four touchdowns. The Wolverines needed every bit of it to keep pace with the powerful rushing attack of Buckeyes stars Carlos Hyde (27 carries, 226 yards, one touchdown) and Braxton Miller (16 carries, 153 yards, three touchdowns). The turnover-prone Gardner even managed to avoid an interception -- until his final throw.

After Hyde scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:20 remaining, Gardner marched toward the end zone and threw a two-yard touchdown to Devin Funchess with 32 seconds left. Facing the prospect of overtime without its regular kicker, Brendan Gibbons (injured in practice this week), and with an opportunity to ruin his rival's perfect season, Hoke sent his offense back on the field.

"We weren't doing a good job slowing them down," said Hoke. "We wanted to go win the football game."

Ohio State counterpart Urban Meyer called a timeout because, "We were blown out on defense," he said. "I wanted to give them a breath." Sometime during that break, Powell said, his position coach, Kerry Coombs, predicted the exact play Michigan would run -- a curl route by receiver Drew Dileo from the back of a triple-stack formation on the right side. Powell promptly jumped it.

"It was such a crazy ending, everyone's head's still spinning," said tight end Jeff Heuerman, who caught a 22-yard touchdown in the third quarter. "A win's a win. We'll take it any way we can get it."

Still, even hours after the ending, it was hard to comprehend exactly how these teams wound up in a 42-41 shootout -- especially given the state of Michigan's offense coming into Saturday. In the Wolverines' previous four games -- losses to Michigan State (29-6) and Nebraska (17-13), an overtime win at Northwestern (27-19) and a loss to Iowa (24-21) -- they managed a combined five offensive touchdowns. Gardner, repeatedly battered by opposing defenses exploiting Michigan's inexperienced offensive line, looked like a shell of his former self.

ELLIS: Ohio State escapes Michigan to remain perfect; early Snap Judgments

A week ago, Michigan managed just 158 total yards against the Hawkeyes. Yet against Ohio State, the Wolverines eclipsed that total in the first quarter (208). Offensive coordinator Al Borges, a recent punching bag for Michigan fans, poured open the playbook by calling reverses, flip passes and more. The Wolverines jumped to a 21-14 second-quarter lead. Order seemed restored when Ohio State came roaring back to take a 35-21 advantage in the third. But Gardner led his team on an 11-play, 83-yard touchdown drive, and then he cashed in on Hyde's lone mistake of the night, a fumble at his own 41-yard line, to tie it up.

At that point, trickery no longer fueled Michigan's attack, unless one counts the repeated throwback passes, including a two-yard touchdown toss to tight end Jake Butt (five catches, 85 yards) on third-and-two. Gardner stood tall amid pressure and fired darts to his receivers, most notably Jeremy Gallon (nine catches, 175 yards, one touchdown). The Wolverines finished with a rivalry-record 603 total yards.

"They kind of looked like a different team," said Ohio State All-America linebacker Ryan Shazier. "But we kind of expected that."

Offensively, Ohio State looked like the same juggernaut it has all season. Hyde, who would be a surefire Heisman finalist had he not served a three-game suspension to open the year, made mincemeat of a defense that came into the day ranked 13th nationally against the run. He broke Beanie Wells' school record for rushing yards in a Michigan game. While Miller did not turn in his finest passing performance (6-of-15 for 133 yards with an interception), he threw a 53-yard touchdown to Devin Smith and broke scoring runs of 53 and 21 yards, respectively.

But the Buckeyes' Achilles heel -- and the reason they will continue to be mentioned a notch below Florida State -- was its pass defense, which came in ranked 52nd nationally (in efficiency rating) and will sag further now.

"We didn't get the normal pressure we usually have, and Gardner is an excellent thrower," said Meyer. "We've got to fix some things."

They'll need to get that issue fixed quickly, because an even tougher test looms next week in Indianapolis. Even with a school-record 24-game winning streak to begin the Meyer era -- consecutive 12-0 marks, a staggering accomplishment no matter the conference -- the Buckeyes don't yet have a trophy to show for it. That opportunity will finally come against the 11-1 Spartans, a team that already figured to be their toughest opponent in two years. Now, after Saturday's escape, the threat feels even greater.

If Ohio State posts win No. 25, there will be no shortage of fury from Buckeye Nation in the event Meyer's team is still excluded from the BCS title game at the expense of a one-loss SEC champion. In reality, the defense that facilitated Gardner's career day on Saturday might be better off accepting the Jan. 1 undercard in Pasadena rather than dealing with the likes of the Seminoles' Jameis Winston.

But that's hardly on anyone's mind in Columbus. Much like Saturday's surprise shootout victory, they'll take a trip to the title game any way they can get it.

Hot Trends: Auburn football: Last-minute notes prior to kickoff

AUBURN, Ala. — We're a little less than half an hour away from kickoff of today's game between No. 4 Auburn and top-ranked Alabama. Before it starts, here are a few pregame notes from Jordan-Hare Stadium. Not much to report today, as the only alteration from Auburn's lineup card has Jake Holland starting at middle linebacker over Kris Frost. Alabama had a pair of changes to its defense: Denzel Devall will start at "Jack" while Cyrus Jones will start at corner. Nova flew from the ramp above section 12 in the southwest corner of the stadium at the 21:00 mark on the pregame clock. One hour prior to kickoff, it was 60 degrees, with sunny skies accompanied by a steady breeze.

And I'm back with one more pregame standup, where I offer my last thoughts heading into today's matchup.

Hot Trends: Why Ohio State vs. Michigan Is the Best Rivalry in College Football

Rivalry-it incites the passions of fans and motivates legions of past and current players. It is the foundation upon which sports, and particularly college sports, is founded upon.

Regardless of where your alma mater sits in the landscape of college football, there will always be one or two teams that are the natural rivals. These are the teams to hate, while also doling out an equal measure of respect for the other side.

That's exactly what makes rivalries such a unique condition of the psychology known as "fandom." The competition, the pageantry, and the bragging rights all come together to make a memorable moment (or two) every single year for all college football teams.

But there is one rivalry that stands above them all. That rivalry is Ohio State vs. Michigan.

Or, as we call it in B1G country, The Game.

There are a number of reasons for OSU and UM to be standing atop the world when it comes to college football rivalries. Here are just a few, to go with the stuffing and sweet potatoes on your Thanksgiving and rivalry weekend. Geographic Proximity = Rivalry

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images

The first and probably most important ingredient in starting a long-term rivalry is geographic proximity.

The closer two schools are to each other geographically, the more likely that recruits will be poached from each other and the more likely that the fan bases will overlap in key recruiting grounds.

Ohio State and Michigan share a border in a part of the country that remains somewhat significant for college football recruiting. While perhaps not the geographic closeness of in-state rivalries such as many others in the Big Ten (Indiana-Purdue, Illinois-Northwestern) or others down south (Alabama-Auburn, South Carolina-Clemson), a big state border provides plenty of crossover for fans and recruits.

The maxim "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" works well in the rivalry context. After all, how better to stab your rival in the back than to stay close enough to steal all the best talent in the region or state, at least when that talent can be convinced to come play at the rival school?

Some of the other major rivalries (Army-Navy, Notre Dame-USC) suffer from not having this geographic proximity.

In addition, Ohio State and Michigan are two of the largest universities in the U.S., which means the alumni bases of both schools span far and wide across this country and worldwide. Therefore, no matter which of these teams you root for, the rival fans are probably gathering just around the corner to cheer against your favorite team.

That makes The Game even more transcendent than some in-state rivalries where the schools are even more geographically close than Columbus is to Ann Arbor. Series Competitiveness = Rivalry

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images

There are many factors that define what makes a rivalry, including important items such as geographical closeness and statewide bragging rights. However, most in-state rivalries like Michigan vs. Michigan State suffer from what is known as the "Big Brother Little Brother" mentality.

Where does this mentality come from? That answer is simple: it typically comes from a discrepancy in the series history. The reason "Little Brother" exists is because that team struggles to beat "Big Brother" on a consistent basis.

The wins for the smaller or less historic school are memorable, but the competitive disadvantage takes away from the magic of the rivalry. A well-balanced pair of rivals never knows exactly what the outcome will be, which makes the wins all the more sweet and the defeats all the more bitter.

Plus, the competitiveness also leads to the ability for upsets on a regular basis. If there's anything college football fans love, it is the upset.

Ohio State and Michigan currently stand at 58-45-6 in the series, with Michigan leading. Even discounting the one game from 2010 that OSU had to vacate, that is only a 14-game spread over 108 eligible games.

That is incredible competitive balance.

The statistic becomes even more impressive when considering the last 25 years, where the series is all tied up 12-12-1. Michigan also won the first 13 games of the series before Ohio State got up to speed with the historic Wolverine program, which means the series is tied 45-45-4 over the last 94 meetings.

It does not get more competitive than that.

Here are some of the other top rivalries in the Big Ten and nationally (currently being played), and how they stack up:

Alabama vs. Auburn: 42-34-1 Florida vs. Florida State: 34-21-2 Clemson vs. South Carolina: 65-41-4 Oregon vs. Oregon State: 64-46-10 USC vs. UCLA: 46-29-7 Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: 83-17-7 Texas vs. Oklahoma: 60-43-5 Michigan vs. Michigan State: 68-33-5 Minnesota vs. Wisconsin: 58-57-8 (closest that could be found with this much history) Alabama vs. Tennessee: 50-38-7 Notre Dame vs. USC: 45-35-5 Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: 52-37-5 Mississippi vs. Mississippi State: 61-43-6 Purdue vs. Indiana: 72-37-6

Many of these top-tier rivalries also have relatively even spreads, but perhaps not to the same extent as OSU and Michigan, especially when considering recent history as well as series totals.

One interesting takeaway from the list above is that in-state rivalries are not generally as competitive as other rivalries, which may be caused by each state really being able to only support one football program at a top level over decades.

Nonetheless, the competitiveness makes for a rivalry, and there is plenty of competitive balance in The Game. Program History = Rivalry

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images

Only a select handful of college football programs can boast 800 wins or more in the long history of the sport. When those top teams come together for regular games, it establishes the long-term rivalries and storylines that make college football great.

However, there are not a ton of rivalries among these top programs. In all, 11 football teams have 800 wins historically: Michigan, Yale, Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Harvard, Alabama, Penn and Tennessee.

Discounting the Ivy League teams, that leaves only eight programs to consider for these top historical rivalries. Out of those remaining teams, here is the list of rivalries with a significant amount of games:

Michigan vs. Ohio State: 109 meetings Michigan vs. Notre Dame: 41 meetings (but inactive after 2013) Texas vs. Oklahoma: 108 meetings Nebraska vs. Oklahoma: 86 meetings (inactive since 2010) Alabama vs. Tennessee: 95 meetings

That's it. A whopping five rivalries among these top eight football programs, and two of these have recently gone on leave thanks to conference realignment. That means those rivalries will simmer down and lose some meaning until picked up again regularly.

So outside of the Red River Rivalry and the "Third Saturday in October" rivalry in the SEC, there is no other rivalry that comes close to The Game for number of meetings between historically dominant programs. It means something when Texas and Oklahoma hit the field together, just like when Michigan and Ohio State step on the same field this weekend.

The Game is beginning to separate itself from the pack of rivalries, including the Iron Bowl. Crazy Men and Traditions = Rivalry

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images

It takes a real special brand of rivalry to bring out the best and worst of the human condition. Some rivalries make typically rational and sane men act in crazy ways. Ohio State and Michigan playing football applies just that type of crazy.

One of the most storied coaches in college football, Woody Hayes, refused to refer to Michigan by name, preferring the moniker "That School Up North." Brady Hoke has now accepted this same challenge and never refers to OSU as "Ohio State," instead using the moniker "Ohio."

The governor of the state of Ohio, John Kasich, decided to ban use of the letter "M" this week in Ohio. This is just pure ridiculousness; all based on a football rivalry!

Ohio State students jump into a freezing cold lake full of duck poop every year during Michigan week. There are competitive blood drives between the schools on the week of the rivalry. Michigan students make a pilgrimage to a local cemetery to lay flowers at the grave sites of three great former Michigan coaches.

There are also more bouts of crazy in the history of this rivalry. When Ohio State and Michigan tied in 1973 and a secret vote of athletic directors decided who would go to the Rose Bowl that season (OSU), the controversy and bad blood boiled over and remains to this day.

Plus, this rivalry started with bad blood based on a short-lived war between these states called the Toledo War. Not many rivalries have a level of crazy built in from an actual civil war!

Kansas and Missouri is one of the few others, but it is not active now that Missouri is in the SEC.

While rivalry traditions and crazy events could be pulled up for every big game (the poisoning of the trees in Alabama-Auburn is another recent top moment of crazy), Ohio State and Michigan could certainly compete with the best in this field. Big Stakes = Rivalry

Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

Another way that rivalries start up is when two great or dominant teams battle one another for national titles or conference championships on a regular basis.

Just take one look at the budding rivalry between Wisconsin and Ohio State to understand this phenomenon. A better example is the more well-established rivalry between LSU and Alabama, which has had huge stakes the past few seasons.

Ohio State and Michigan routinely play for these large stakes. At least one of the two teams is typically competing for a conference championship, if not a national championship.

The highlight of this was in 2006, when the teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 nationally and both were undefeated heading into The Game. That day, Ohio State won a chance to play for a BCS Championship as well as the Big Ten title and bragging rights.

Those are stakes that draw the entire country's attention.

Between the teams, there are 18 national titles and 76 Big Ten championships. No other team in the conference has more than 15 Big Ten titles, which means generally one or both of these programs has the hardware on the line in this season finale.

2013 is yet another example of this, as Ohio State is heading into a Big Ten Championship game and is trying to avoid having a season spoiled by Michigan. One only has to ask the Buckeye teams of 1993, 1995 and 1996 how it feels to have a dream season ruined in The Game.

Of course, all eyes are on the Iron Bowl this year as Auburn and Alabama meet with both teams playing for a SEC title and both teams ranked in the top 5 for the first time ever.

Those are the types of high stakes that make rivalries grand, but the Iron Bowl cannot boast the amount of meetings with those high stakes on the line that The Game can.

Thus, while every rivalry is one to enjoy and savor each college football season, Michigan and Ohio State stand above the rest. The Game = Rivalry

The Game is the best rivalry in college football, and one of the best in all of sports.

Enjoy the 110th edition this weekend, regardless of whether you cheer for Ohio State, Michigan or neither.

Hot Trends: Obama shops at DC bookstore on Small Business Saturday

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Obama is doing his part to support small businesses.

Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha dropped in Saturday at Washington's Politics and Prose bookstore and purchased what he said was a "long list" of books that included The Kite Runner,Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Sports Gene.

The president said he bought a reader for every age, from 5 to 52 - his age. He paid by credit card. The total was not announced.

Obama sent a tweet earlier Saturday about the importance of supporting small businesses.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as "Small Business Saturday." It's designed to drive business to mom and pop shops between the whirlwind of Black Friday sales offered by large retailers and Cyber Monday deals from online sellers. Hot Trends: Garth Brooks gushes about life with Trisha Yearwood

June 16, 2011. Singers Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood pose as they arrive for the Songwriters Hall of Fame awards in New York.Reuters

Garth Brooks may have been married to Trisha Yearwood for almost 13 years but he still sounds like a gushing newlywed when discussing her. In an interview for the Friday, November 29, episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Friday, November 29, the country superstar talked at length about their relationship.

The "Wrapped Up In You" singer explained that they met through songwriter Kent Blazy who thought the pair would get along. Brooks confessed that there was an immediate attraction. "When she left, he goes, 'What did you think?' I said, 'Well, it's strange, because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife, but I've been married for 13 months,'" he explained. At the time the singer was wed to college sweetheart Sandy Mahl. "Being married, it's got to be right. This is who you went to college with, and you were married in front of God and your family and everything," he told DeGeneres. "So you keep hacking, and you work and you work and you work. And then comes that time where you're looking at the rest of your life going, 'How do you want to live it?'" They went onto to have three daughters before divorcing in 2000. Yearwood who had two failed marriages behind her was also single and the pair began dating before marrying in December 2005.

"This was somebody I always enjoyed being around. And we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did. And so we started seeing each other after the divorce," he recalled. "We'd known each other music-wise, but we got to see each other as people. And I've got to tell you, if you like her and don't know her, you'll love her. If you love her and don't know her, you'll worship her. She's the real deal." And it seems that Brooks is just as besotted with his missus as the first time he ever met her. "I've got to tell you, I never knew it could be like this," the 51-year-old singer told DeGeneres of life with Yearwood. "I never knew that everyday you could wake up and feel like this. And I have God and I have Ms. Yearwood to thank for this." He also bragged about her many side ventures like a Food Network cooking show and three cookbooks. "I'm part of the working wives club," he joked. "I lay out at the pool with the other husbands." "She's the bomb, man. She does it all," he said proudly. But the one thing that Yearwood does the best? (according to her hubby). "Make no mistake -- Ms. Yearwood was born to sing. That's just what she does...I'll put her in the top five female voices of all time. She's that good," Brooks declared.

Hot Trends: Small Business Saturday fosters mom-and-pop shopping

Where you buy affects your local economy.

Black Friday and, increasingly, Thanksgiving night are for big-box retailers with thousands of stores, but Theresa Mitchell says Saturday is the day for businesses like hers.

Mitchell and her mother, Jan Stewart, own The Bath Cottage, a 36-year-old bed and bath retailer in Cocoa, Fla. COLUMN: Bookstores benefit from Small Biz SatSTORY: Small Business Saturday is a big hit

"Small business is something that Americans are losing sight of with Internet buying and big box stores," Mitchell said. "Some people are forgetting that small businesses are very much a part of their community."

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday, a day set aside since 2010 between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to encourage shoppers to spend their holiday money at local mom-and-pop stores on clothing, jewelry, toys, accessories and other merchandise.

Tramarea Adams' clothing store, Golden Glam Boutique in Jackson, Miss., doesn't have a million-dollar advertising budget. But like the Macy's and JCPenney stores across the USA, it needs a steady stream of customers.

Golden Glam opened about a year ago, so this is Adams' first chance to promote her store through Small Business Saturday. Her Heels, Ties and Toys event will spotlight not only her store's clothing but also serve as a toy drive for a local shelter for abused women and children.

"This year, a lot of people have committed to shopping with us," she said. Golden Glam is opening an hour earlier than usual.

More than 9 in 10 small-business owners nationally give back to their communities in some way, be it working with nonprofits, coaching youth sports teams or holding public office, said Ron Aldridge, Mississippi director of the nonprofit nonpartisan National Federation of Independent Business.

In Springfield, Mo., 5 Pound Apparel gives back by selling only items that help a charitable cause. It doesn't eschew Black Friday - the store had a line stretching down the block before it opened at 6 a.m. CT Friday - but Bryan Simpson, owner of the clothing retailer, said he has different strategies for each day's customers.

American Express, which started Small Business Saturday in part to help small retailers during the economic downturn; the NFIB; and the federal Small Business Administration estimate that nearly 70 million customers spent $5.5 billion nationwide last year at small, independent stores during the event.

"It's the buying-local concept, that personalized service, that circle of money that stays more in the community," Aldridge said. "You're helping take care of your friends that you know in the community."

Before the recession, a small-scale study in the Chicago neighborhood of Andersonville found that more than two-thirds of the money customers spent with local companies remained in the Chicago economy; 57 cents of every dollar spent at chain stores left the Chicago area, according to Civic Economics, economic development consultants with offices in Chicago and Austin.

Local businesses provide "jobs for our residents and members of our community," said shopper Kristi Hilliard of Macon, Ga., who says she always tries to support retailers in her area because of the personalized service and the boost to central Georgia's economy. "If those businesses close, then those people would lose their jobs."

A cluster of small businesses on the courthouse square is the economic foundation of historic Canton, Miss., a city of about 13,000 people north of Jackson, Miss. Small Business Saturday is Day 2 of the city's three-day Merchants Open House; participating busineses are staying open extra hours and offering robust discounts.

"We're a small, family-owned business that's been here for 65 years," said Alice Jean Hawkins, co-owner of Noble-Watts Jewelers & Gifts. "So many of the stores on the square are family owned and operated, so it's an important day for a lot of us." More than three dozen of the city's businesses are participating.

The National Federation of Independent Business said more than 350 retailers across the USA have registered at its website as participants. American Express is offering a $10 statement credit, down from $25 last year, to cardholders who register at its website and shop at participating retailers. Thousands of businesses have registered at the American Express site; both sites have maps of participating shops, restaurants and service providers.

The movement has gained momentum through the use of social media, and in this fourth year businesses and shoppers are being encouraged to tweet using the hashtags #SmallBizSat and #ShopSmall. On Facebook, the Small Business Saturday page now has 3.3 million likes. Customers using Foursquare, the location-based mobile service, to check in at businesses receive recommendations for nearby participating shops and restaurants.

Though a credit-card company started Small Business Saturday, Aldridge said shoppers can help their local businesses more if they use cash or a personal check. Debit and credit cards generate fees that businesses have to pay from the proceeds of a sale, and those fees generally go out of state.

Lisa Curatolo, who owns The Goat Boy gift shop in Owego, N.Y., said the day has had a positive effect on her business in years past.

"Even though it is one day, there's a pour-over for weeks from that," she said. "For a community to really survive and do well, we need all the businesses to do well. So we really need to raise awareness of every business that's down here."

Hot Trends: Evelyn Lozada expecting a baby, not Chad Johnson's

Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images

Evelyn Lozada has apparently moved on from Chad Johnson in a big way.

The reality TV star is reportedly six months pregnant and the baby is not her ex's, reports TMZ.

According to sources close to Lozada, 37, she has been in a romance with a new man for nearly a year and they have become serious.

Additionally, the "Basketball Wives" star's news that she's expecting was apparently planned as she and her new beau supposedly wanted to have a child together.

The mother of one -- 20-year-old Shaniece -- split from Johnson in September 2012 after claims he physically abused her. RELATED: PHOTOS: EVELYN LOZADA'S BLOODY HEAD GASH FROM CHAD JOHNSON FIGHT

In June, TMZ released photos of Lozada with a bloody gash on her forehead, which were reportedly the result of Johnson head-butting her just two months into their marriage.

The incident was said to have happened after the couple got into an argument on Aug. 11, 2012. Lozada filed for divorce three days after their altercation.

The 35-year-old athlete was arrested and sentenced to 12 months' probation and domestic violence classes. He was later put in jail for 30 days after slapping his lawyer's backside during a probation hearing.

Now, it looks like Lozada has put the past behind her and is looking forward to becoming a mother again after giving birth to her first child at the age of 17.

The sources add that until now, only a few of her family members knew she was with child.

Hot Trends: Evelyn Lozada Is Pregnant — With Chad Johnson's Baby?

SplashNews, Bauer-Griffin Pictures of the sexy 'Basketball Wives' star surfaced on Nov. 29 showing that she was definitely pregnant! Now the only question is: Who is the father? Read on to find out!

Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson officially divorced in Sept. 2012, but will they be parents together? With the Basketball Wives star's secret - that she's reportedly six month into her pregnancy - out, Chad may be wondering if he's going to be a father. Evelyn Lozada Six Months Pregnant

Pictures were snapped of Evelyn in Miami on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, proving that Evelyn is very pregnant. In maternity wear, Evelyn strolled along the beach with her 20-year-old daughter Shaniece, flaunting her baby bump and holding her stomach frequently.

But for Chad, whose marriage to Evelyn ended after two months in Sept. 2012, he doesn't have anything to worry about, according to TMZ.

Evelyn has reportedly been in a relationship with another man for almost a year and the relationship is very serious. The pregnancy was reportedly planned and until now, only a few family members knew about the baby on board. Evelyn Lozada & Chad Johnson's Drama-Filled Relationship

We're happy to hear that Evelyn's second child will be born into a drama-free environment - it would've been trouble if the baby had turned out to be Chad's.

The two seemed to be happily married - they tied the knot in July of 2012 - until Chad was shockingly arrested for assaulting Evelyn in Aug. 2012. Chad was charged with domestic battery for allegedly head-butting Evelyn after an argument. He was immediately released from the Miami Dolphins, and Evelyn filed for divorce shortly after.

In Sept. 2012, Chad plead no contest and was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, and sentenced to one year of probation.

But it really seems like that chapter of Evelyn's life is over. Hot Trends: Another sellout for PS 4 and Xbox One at Wal-Mart and GameStop

Wal-Mart and GameStop both said this morning that stores sold out of the latest shipments of Xbox One and Playstation 4 consoles.

Neither retailer divulged how many Xbox One and PS 4 consoles it sold. Wal-Mart sold out last night. GameStop, which didn't open on Thanksgiving Day and stuck to its midnight Black Friday opening, did so this morning.

Neither of the video game players, that also double as movie and entertainment boxes, were even among the door busters at Wal-Mart, so it shows the appetite that's out here for the new Microsoft and Sony consoles. Xbox One retails for $499 and PS 4 sells for $399.

Joey Mooring, spokesman for Grapevine-based GameStop, said the two consoles were the most requested items overnight. Stores received a new supply of both consoles for Black Friday.

"Many of our stores sold through their inventory of the units within minutes of opening the store," Mooring said.

Hot Trends: 'Basketball Wives' star Evelyn Lozada is pregnant

The news comes a year after her mini-marriage to Chad Johnson spectacularly fell apart.

Evelyn Lozada is finally getting some happiness.

A year after the Basketball Wives star's marriage to NFL Pro Bowler Chad Johnson abruptly imploded after only two months - she accused him of head-butting her, which led to his domestic battery arrest - Lozada is expecting a baby.

"I am so excited to announce a wonderful blessing - I'm pregnant!" the 37-year-old told People.

For now, she's not revealing who the dad is. "I'm excited about being a mommy all over again," added Lozada (daughter, Shaniece, 20, is from a previous relationship). "This is something I've been wanting for years, and I can't believe it's finally happening."

Hot Trends: Apple Store Black Friday Sales: iPad Deals + Best Bet for Power Users

The Apple Store is ready for shoppers who missed out on Walmart and Best Buy Black Friday sales this morning with a collection of online Black Friday iPad, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, iPod and even accessory deals for shoppers.

As we shared very early this morning the new Apple Store Black Friday sales are a change from the standard Apple tradition of cutting prices by $21, $41 and $101 on select products. This is a much better for shoppers in overall value, but it does mean paying a higher up front price and more tax on the purchase. Still, the Apple Store is a good place to look for Black Friday sales online today instead of looking for leftovers in the aisles at stores that opened up last night or early this morning.

Most of the Black Friday Sales are over in stores for the 2013 shopping events, which means even though there were better Black Friday 2013 deals on Thanksgiving and early this morning on Black Friday.

The Apple Store Black Friday sales are available online and in store, but users who want a custom configured MacBook Pro, MacBook Air or iMac should buy online. Users can also do an order for in store pickup.

If you are looking for up front Black Friday sales Best Buy is still a great place to look, with online deals on the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The Best Buy offers are up front discounts and include one or two models for each notebook, but the Apple Store is selling all models including custom options, with the gift card bonus.

Apple Store Black Friday Sales

With the Apple Store offerings this year, users who normally skip out on Black Friday sales because they want a higher end MacBook Pro can still get in on the savings. This discount will not combine with student or employer discounts, but it will beat the overall savings for the student discount that is $100 on some devices.

iPad Air - $75 gift card iPad 2 - $50 gift card iPad mini - $50 gift card iPod touch - $50 gift card iPod nano - $25 gift card Macbook Air - $150 gift card Macbook Pro - $150 gift card Macbook Pro with Retina display - $150 gift card iMac - $150 gift card Apple TV - $25 gift card Nest - $50 Gift Card $25 to $50 gift cards on other accessories.

Sure, the iPad mini was $100 cheaper after gift card at Best Buy and Walmart earlier this week, but you would need to deal with hectic shopping and possible sell outs at Best Buy. With this deal you end up with a sure fire deal. The gift card cannot be used on this purchase, but most users will find an accessory to spend the cash on, or you can buy AppleCare from Apple after the initial purchase and use the gift card for that.

There are no iPhone Black Friday 2013 deals at the Apple Store, but users can look at the slideshow below to see where they still may be able to score a discount as Black Friday sales wind down.

Hot Trends: Santa Express Arrives To Kick Of The Holiday Season

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Black Friday may kick of the holiday season for some, but for those under a certain age - the season doesn't start until "you know who" arrives from the North Pole.

And that happened Friday, when Santa came to town - on SEPTA.

The Santa Express traveled from the 69th Street station to 11th Street, delivering Santa Claus and his posse of elves, as well as hundreds of adoring young fans.

"It was fun. The elves and the Santa Claus, they were dancing and singing songs," this youngster said.

And others who were just young at heart.

"I get a thrill out of it too. I never had this when I was growing up."

A New Orleans-style string Band lead Santa through Market East, where he made the official count down to the holiday season.

And then of course, the kids stood in line to speak to Santa himself - and put in those orders:

"I want a phone!"

"I want a car!"

"I want a unicorn!"

And finally, well wishes to go around.

"Merry Christmas!," said one girl.

Hot Trends: iPad mini 3: what we want to see

How Apple can make the iPad Mini 3 awesome

Our recent review of the iPad mini 2, or to stick with Apple's naming strategy, the iPad mini with Retina Display, found it to be a really capable little device.

Somewhat surprisingly it shares most of the cutting edge technology of its bigger brother, the iPad Air, and finally adds the Retina display which it had been lacking so sorely.

But it's not perfect. It's still too expensive, has no Touch ID sensor and the base 16GB capacity is rapidly becoming too small for many users. So what do we want to see in the next model? Touch ID

You end up entering passwords just as much on an iPad as you do on an iPhone, so it's surprising that the newest iPads didn't get the same Touch ID fingerprint sensor as the iPhone 5S got.

We'd really like to see these included in the iPad mini 3, not least because they would allow multiuser interaction - just touch to switch to your personal iPad account. Of course Apple would also have to build multi user support into iOS first, and it's arguable they'd rather sell you two iPads instead. More storage in the base model

16GB of storage in the cheapest iPad used to sound like a lot but now it's really starting to look a bit stingy, with apps like GarageBand and iMovie going free, some iOS games starting to take up over a gigabyte of space and Retina screens making high resolution movies worth loading onto your iPad.

The steep price jumps for the higher capacity models look cynical, especially when flash memory itself is not expensive and Apple offers no way to add storage via card slots. Starting the new models at 32GB would be more reasonable. Cheaper cellular option

Adding a cellular option to an iPad mini currently adds £100/$130/AU$150 to the price, and of course you have to pay for data on top of that.

Given that the only difference between the innards of a wi-fi only and a cellular iPad is the addition of some mass-produced radio circuitry, it would be nice to bring the additional cost premium down a bit so that more people would opt for the cellular option and be able to use their iPads on the move. This is especially true of the supremely portable mini. Wireless charging

A bit of a pipe dream perhaps, but wireless charging technology already exists and is used by some phone and tablet manufacturers, such as in the Google Nexus 7.

Being able to place your device on a charging slab rather than having to plug it in might sound like only a small timesaver but just think about how many times over the life of a device you have to recharge it.

It also reduces the possibility of wear and tear or damage resulting from physically plugging cables in over and over again. Pressure sensitive screen

The addition of the M7 motion co-processor to the iPad mini 2 was somewhat unexpected but will be handy as more apps start to make use of it.

Haptic or pressure sensitive screens already exist, and make for more accurate and flexible interaction with your device, especially for games, music or art apps where you want your finger to do more than just register a touch.

Apple might not think the technology is up to it yet, but this could be one to watch for the future. A memory card slot

We really won't hold our breath for this one because Apple famously uses as few ports as possible. In fact only one on most of its devices, the Lightning connector.

Nevertheless many competing tablets do support card slots for adding your own memory cards and this can be a massively useful thing to be able to do.

Need to take 64GB of movies on holiday with you but only have a 16GB device? Just buy an inexpensive card and whack it in. You can see how handy this would be.

More iCloud storage with every account

OK so this isn't iPad-specific but it's becoming a real issue. Apple gives every Apple ID a free 5GB of iCloud storage which is great, but it's no longer enough.

Imagine you have an iPhone and an iPad and maybe a Mac too. Each one is backing up to iCloud and you are also saving files into iCloud, as Apple encourages you to do. That 5GB doesn't last long and you can find yourself having to buy more. For a company with Apple's resources that seems a bit mean. Longer battery life

The battery life of the iPad mini 2 is actually very good, but with portable devices like these there's no real upper limit on how good people would ideally like it to be.

Since Apple seems for the most part to be able to make each new generation of devices smaller or lighter while maintaining or even improving battery life, we'd hope to see this continue with the next generation of iPads.

As well as improving battery technology it can tweak iOS to make the best possible use of the battery, since it designs both the software and hardware.

A smaller bezel

There's no doubt that iPads have been getting better in this respect, as have iPhones. But from the user's point of view the space around the edges of the screen on a touchscreen device is largely wasted space.

You do need some non-touch sensitive space in order to be able to hold a device without triggering it accidentally, but not much. So if Apple were able to keep shrinking the size of the bezel around the edges of the touch screen area, that would be pretty cool. A better camera

iPads have become very popular for taking pictures and video, especially the more portable mini.

The iPad mini 2 has a 5MP camera with 1080p HD video support and that's good, but it lacks the slo-mo support of the iPhone 5S and also the filters for image editing although you can obviously perform some edits and use HDR mode, and use third-party photo or camera apps.

Apple could conceivably add features via software updates, but a higher resolution stills camera would be nice to see in future.

Hot Trends: Newegg loses patent infringement case

Newegg, an online retailer, has had a history of standing tall in the face of patent trolls. But the company has lost its most recent battle with a non-practicing entity, as it has been ordered to pay $2.3 million to TQP Development.

An eight-member jury has determined that Newegg infringed on four claims of a patent owned by TQP. More importantly, it found that the patent was indeed valid, rejecting arguments that the patent in question did not cover any sufficiently unique technology.

In the past, TQP has managed to wring over $45 million in patent licensing fees from 139 companies by reaching settlements with them. The patent in question covers Internet security encryption used by online retailers such as Newegg.

The jury reached a verdict quickly, taking less then three hours to deliberate. The $2.3 million figure was less than half of the $5.1 million that TQP had been seeking.

This is far from the first NPE case that Newegg has opted to take to court rather than settle. It won a case earlier this year against Soverain, a company that claimed patent rights on various "shopping cart" technologies. Originally, a judge ordered Newegg to pay $2.5 million to Soverain (far less than the $34 million the company had been seeking), but the online retailer scored a victory on appeal.

Hot Trends: PS4 Black Friday Bundle In Stock at GameStop Online Store

GameStop is now selling its PlayStation 4 Black Friday bundle online while supplies last. The company is also offering the PS4 at its retail locations, but if you aren't already in line for one you're probably too late as the stores opened at midnight and quantities are limited. The GameStop Black Friday PS4 bundle includes two games and two controllers.

The PS4 is one of the hottest items this holiday season, selling out virtually everywhere when it launched on November 16. Since then, retailers have struggled to deliver additional units to those who were unable to secure PS4 pre-orders. Rather than discount the PS4 like most other items on Black Friday, retailers are simply promoting the fact that they have a few to sell.

The GameStop PS4 bundle costs $609.95 and comes with two DualShock 4 controllers, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, and a 1-year PlayStation Plus membership. That means buyers will be paying full price for each of the bundled items. Unfortunately, GameStop won't sell the base PS4 console or allow its customers to choose alternate games. Titles like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and FIFA 14 are all in greater demand than the titles included in the GameStop PS4 Black Friday bundle.

The base PS4 console costs just $399.99. At least some PS4 buyers may pay the steep premium even if they don't want the included games to ensure they get a console before Christmas.

The PS4 was available at some Walmart stores when the company's Black Friday sales kicked off at 6PM on Thanksgiving. Quantities were limited however and we've heard reports of stores selling out quickly. Amazon.com and other major retailers are currently sold out of the PS4.

The GameStop Black Friday PS4 Bundle can be found at GameStop.com. The site currently states that the PS4 will ship within 24 hours. We don't expect GameStop to be able to keep that promise for long.

The XBox One is the PS4′s rival and also tough to come by, though it seems to be a little easier to get ahold of one on Black Friday. The XBox One costs $499 without any games, but the $100 premium is justified since it comes with the Kinect Sensor, a device that allows users to play games and navigate entertainment apps using gestures rather than controllers. The XBox One is currently available at Rakuten.com.

Hot Trends: Target, Best Buy, GameStop, and Wal-Mart Gear Up with Black Friday Deals

Now that everybody's stuffed with turkey and pumpkin pie, it's time to turn our attention to the one topic on every shopper's mind -- Black Friday. Judging from the lines at TargetBest BuyGameStopWal-Mart ( ) , it's safe to say that retailers aren't going to be disappointed this year.

Target lures in shoppers with big consumer electronic discounts

Target launched a pre-emptive strike on Black Friday, opening its doors on Thanksgiving Day at 8 p.m.

At a Target store in Los Angeles, the line had swelled to over 1,000 people by the time the doors opened, and shoppers stormed the superstore in search of some steep discounts.

Some major deals at Target include 40-inch Westinghouse televisions for $200 and NASDAQOTH: NASDAQ: Nintendo's ( NTDOY ) 3DS handheld console, which was marked down from $200 to $150. Early adopters of Apple's ( AAPL ) iPad Air, who received $100 Black Friday gift cards for all iPad models at Target, were back and looking to pick up additional iPads. Target stores will remain open until 11 p.m. on Black Friday. Best Buy runs Black Friday drills to prepare for mayhem

Meanwhile, shoppers also swarmed Best Buy, the brick-and-mortar consumer electronics giant that is now making a surprising comeback after being trampled by e-commerce giants Amazon and eBay over the past decade.

Best Buy, like many other retailers, runs drills to ensure that its stores run at peak efficiency on Black Friday, the most crucial and chaotic shopping day of the year. In a Best Buy location in Watertown, Massachusetts, employees were required to arrive at work early five days ago to run a "Black Friday simulation" -- the retail equivalent of an air raid drill, where employees practiced techniques in group (rather than one-on-one) selling and crowd control.

This year, some deals at Best Buy include a $100 discount on Apple's iPad 2 (Wi-Fi), $500 discounts on LG 55-inch LED HDTVs, and desktops under $200. Best Buy is also trying to attract customers with bundled items, such as accessories for digital cameras, or peripherals for NASDAQ: Microsoft's ( MSFT ) Xbox One and Sony's ( ) Playstation 4.

Best Buy locations open at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will remain open until 10 p.m. on Black Friday. GameStop offers console bundles at steep discounts

Meanwhile, GameStop is offering some huge deals for gamers on Black Friday.

Some top deals include an Xbox 360 bundle including a 250GB hard drive, Halo 4, and Tomb Raider for $199, and a PS3 bundle featuring a 250GB hard drive, The Last of Us, and Batman: Arkham Origins for $199. In addition, GameStop is offering a "buy two, get one free" offer for pre-owned games, accessories, and consoles.

GameStop is also offering an Xbox One bundle that includes Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son of Rome, an extra controller, and a $20 gift card all for $700.

GameStop is definitely expecting some major foot traffic at its stores -- it just hired an additional 17,000 employees to staff its stores. However, it remains to be seen if these bundles can compete with those being offered at Best Buy.

Unlike Target and Best Buy, GameStop is not opening its doors on Thanksgiving Day -- it is opening at 12:01 a.m. on Friday morning instead. The annual Wal-Mart stampede

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart's Black Friday has become a retail event not so much recognized for its discounts, but for the ambulances that are dispatched to the superstores nearly every year.

This year was no exception -- numerous fights have broken out over flat-screen TVs, tablets, and other products, and a man was even stabbed in Virginia. In recent years, Wal-Mart has attempted to curb these violent events by distributing wristbands in high-traffic situations. These wristbands allow shoppers to return two hours after the event to pick up their purchases to avoid the lines and crowds. Best Buy employs a similar chaos-averting system using tickets.

Some of Wal-Mart's top deals during Black Friday include an Emerson 50" LED LCD HDTV for $288, a Funai 32" LED LCD HDTV for $98, and a Samsung 51" Plasma HDTV for $427. Similar to Target, Wal-Mart is selling a $100 Wal-Mart gift card with Apple's iPad mini (16GB Wi-Fi) for $299. It is also offering Apple's iPhone 5C (16GB) and a $75 Wal-Mart Gift Card for $45 -- with a contract, of course.

Wal-Mart locations opened at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will remain open all day on Black Friday. Special doorbuster deals were available at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m on Thursday and at 8 a.m. on Friday. Why does Black Friday matter so much?

For retailers like Target, Best Buy, GameStop, and Wal-Mart, Black Friday marks the beginning of its most important quarter -- the holiday season that leads straight into Christmas.

To better understand the impact of the Black Friday through Christmas shopping season, simply take a look at the quarterly revenue performance of these four companies over the past five years.

Those peaks at the end of every year leading into the next year represent the importance of the holiday season to these retailers. However, retailers are dramatically sacrificing margins in exchange for higher sales -- a business model that is ultimately unsustainable unless there is Black Friday-like foot traffic every day.

Therefore, Black Friday is the perfect storm of pent-up consumer demand before the holiday season and the retailers' commitment to putting the pedal to the metal in an effort to generate as much sales as possible in a single quarter.

In closing, enjoy your shopping and stay safe, fellow Fools, and we'll be back to provide you with further updates on the next big shopping day -- Cyber Monday!

Hot Trends: Black Friday 2013: US Apple stores offer gift cards instead of discounts on ...

Summary: The company's discounts used to be small, but this year they have been replaced with store gift cards with the purchase of select Apple products and third-party accessories.

Apple watchers woke up Thanksgiving morning to a new wrinkle in the company's typical Black Friday plans. Instead of the usual small discounts the company offered across most of its product lines in years past, the Australian Apple Store launched with gift cards being promoted for the purchase of many items instead. Then to confuse things more, European Apple Stores came online after midnight with the typical discounts, and not the gift cards.

What would Apple do in the U.S.? After the online store went down for a few hours this morning, it's returned with the same Black Friday gift card "deal" as greeted Aussie shoppers. In other words, there will be no sale prices for products sold at Apple stores this Black Friday, just gift cards.

If you're still willing to buy directly from Apple today, be prepared for further disappointment if you're planning to buy an iPhone 5c or 5s or the iPad mini with Retina display. That's because Apple isn't offering a gift for these popular new products. In comparison, Walmart will provide a $75 gift card if you pick up a 5c or 5s at its stores this weekend, and Target is offering a $75 card for an iPad mini with Retina display purchase.

You will receive a $75 Apple gift card if you buy an iPad Air, which is $25 less than what Target is offering on Black Friday if you purchase the tablet from that store. You can get a $50 gift card with the purchase of an original iPad mini or an iPad 2 -- Walmart offered a $100 gift card for an iPad mini purchase yesterday as part of its first round of doorbusters, while Best Buy matched it online earlier this week. Target is offering $75 gift cards for the first-generation iPad mini and $100 cards for an iPad 2.

Those looking for a new Mac can score a $150 Apple gift card, whether you're grabbing a new iMac or a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Note, however, that Best Buy is slashing the price on Macs for Black Friday, either by $150 or $200 depending on the configuration. Though a gift card is nice if you're planning on buying other in-store purchases, when it comes to systems, the lower price is probably preferable to most buyers.

The iPod is still around and kicking, and will be part of the Black Friday gift card fest. The iPod touch comes with a $50 card, while the latest iPod nano includes a $25 card. Some miscellaneous Apple products are also being offered with gift cards, ranging from the Apple TV ($25 card) to the AirPort Extreme and 2TB AirPort Time Capsule ($50).

Finally, there are some third-party accessories that Apple will sell with gift cards worth up to $75. Many will include a $25 card, such as the Nike+ FuelBand SE, Powerbeats by Dr. Dre headphones, and Mophie Juice Pack Air iPhone 5 battery case, while purchases of such items as the second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, GoPro HERO3+ camera, and Beats by Dr. Dre Studio headphones will come with a $50 card. Buying the $499.95 Bowers & Wilkins A5 AirPlay wireless music system nets you a $75 gift card.

Hot Trends: NFL: DeMarco Murray scores three TDs to lead Cowboys over Raiders, 31-24

Arlington, Texas * Tony Romo was sick, and it wasn't because he had just watched the Oakland Raiders return a fumble for a touchdown on the opening kickoff.

After the Dallas quarterback caught a virus the night before Thanksgiving, his top two running backs were there to help out.

DeMarco Murray ran for three touchdowns, backup Lance Dunbar led Dallas with a career-high 82 yards rushing and the Cowboys overcame the shock of Oakland's early score to beat the Raiders 31-24 Thursday.

Romo still did his part. He was behind 7-0 before taking his first snap, and his offense didn't have a yard in the second quarter when he took the field down 21-7 with less than 2 minutes remaining before halftime.

Five completions from Romo later, Murray scored on a 4-yard run 10 seconds before halftime and set the stage for a second-half rally that put the Cowboys (7-5) two games above .500 for the first time since late last season.

Dallas is at least temporarily ahead of Philadelphia (6-5) atop the NFC East.

"To have the opening kickoff fumbled and returned for a touchdown and then be down a couple of scores in the first half, nobody blinked," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "The momentum kind of turned and I think guys started feeling pretty good and it just continued."

Dallas was without kick returner Dwayne Harris because of a hamstring injury, and rookie replacement Terrance Williams gave the Raiders a touchdown with a fumble on the opening kickoff.

Greg Jenkins picked up the ball at the 23 after it squirted away from the pile and outran everyone to the pylon. The play was upheld on review after replay showed Williams' knee hitting the turf just as the ball was coming out.

Matt McGloin, an undrafted rookie quarterback making his third career start, had a strong first half for the Raiders.

But without much help from the league's fifth-best rushing attack, his offense stalled in the second half as Oakland (4-8) clinched an 11th straight season without a winning record since going to the Super Bowl during the 2002 season.

Rashad Jennings rushed for 35 yards on 17 carries - a 2.1-yard average - and had both of Oakland's offensive touchdowns. Darren McFadden carried just five times for 13 yards in his return after missing three games with a hamstring injury.

The Raiders finished with 50 yards rushing - 1 more than their season low - while the Cowboys came with the league's 29th-ranked rushing offense and had 144 yards on the ground, their second-best total of the year.

"The game boiled down to, in the second half we wore down," said Raiders coach Dennis Allen, the league's youngest head coach making his first appearance near the Dallas suburb of Hurst, where he grew up. "They were able to run the ball and we weren't able to get off the field."

Murray had just 25 yards after his third TD, but ran for another 38 to help Dallas burn the clock with a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. Most of the late damage came on a drive to Dan Bailey's 19-yard field goal to put Dallas up by 10 with 1:56 left.

Murray, who tied the score at 7-all on a 2-yard run the first play after a fumble by McGloin late in the first quarter, also had 39 yards receiving.

"I was just playing like I always play," Murray said. "I'm not worried about anything else. I'm just doing the best I can do and trying to help this team win."

Dunbar, who went out with a left knee sprain in the fourth quarter, sparked the tying and go-ahead touchdown drives in the second half, highlighted by a 45-yard run that led to a 4-yard scoring pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, who had seven catches for 61 yards.

McGloin, who was 18 of 30 for 255 yards, converted five straight third downs with passes on a pair of touchdown drives in the second quarter.
