Radio Station Spots 'Elderly Fan' Next to David Beckham, Is in Fact Niki Lauda

Word News

Captioning is not always an easy job, especially if you're dealing with an unfamiliar field.

So when radio station Heart FM decided to put up some pictures of David Beckham at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, there was the perfect opening for a mix-up.

Beckham, who was with the Mercedes team over the race weekend, was spotted with what the station described as an "elderly fan":

David Beckham poses with an elderly fan at the Singapore Grand Prix. Bless!

Bless indeed.

While that is probably fair enough, it did rather leave out the important details: namely, that the elderly gentleman in question was Niki Lauda, the triple world champion and current non-executive chairman of the Mercedes F1 team.

And what's more, of course, is that Lauda's story of recovery from a near-fatal accident in the 1976 season to challenge for the F1 title has been turned into a feature film. That's still in cinemas.

Having been spotted and circulated on Twitter, it's no surprise to see a swift update from Heart on the picture, where "elderly fan" has been upgraded to "F1 icon" status:

Hat-tip to for spotting this one.
